The revised GB/T 16931-2022, Classification of winter para sports athletes, was published on January 21 by State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR). The standard helps facilitate the normative development of the winter sports for the disabled, playing a guiding role in the event organization and material selection for such athletes.
Classification is the basis of fair para sports competitions. To further improve the standard in a scientific, advanced and applicable way, SAMR worked with relevant departments to revise the previous standard released in 1997.
The newly revised standard specifies the requirements for the classification of disabled athletes for six winter sports covering alpine skiing, snowboard, cross-country skiing, biathlon, wheelchair curling and ice hockey.
To meet the development demand of winter para sports, the standard adds the classification criterion of para sports including snowboard, wheelchair curling and ice hockey, revises the classification criterion of alpine skiing and biathlon, and adds the classification criterion of sitting posture. Besides, it adds the evaluation method of injury category and classification evaluation for para sports athletes, making standards more operable.
