The General Assembly of the Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT) was held in Nassau, capital of the Bahamas from April 27 to 30, 2026. More than 70 representatives attended the meeting, and they were from official members such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Colombia, associate members including China, Australia, Singapore and Spain, as well as international and regional organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Caribbean Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) and Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC).
The Chinese delegation, composed of officials from the Standards Innovative Management Department of SAMR and the China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS), attended the meeting.
Hosted by the Bahamas Bureau of Standards and Quality (BBSQ), the event released the COPANT Strategic Plan 2026-2030. Discussions focused on four major themes: technical capacity and inclusiveness, digital transformation and innovation, sustainability and circular economy, as well as governance and influence. Participants reviewed the minutes, Secretary-General’s report and financial report, and held a series of thematic seminars covering resilience building, joint ISO-COPANT exchanges, and the World Development Report 2025: Standards for Development.
During the event, the Chinese delegation held bilateral talks with delegations from BBSQ, the national standardization bodies of Canada and Colombia, and the CARICOM Regional Organization for Standards and Quality (CROSQ) to advance bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the field of standardization.
